Spider-Man franchise will exit the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel will no longer be producing any Spider-Man films reported by Deadline.
According to Deadline’s report the break is due to disputes between Sony — which still holds the rights to the character — and Marvel’s parent company Disney over revenue sharing from films starring the web-slinging hero.
According to the report by Deadline, Disney demanded a larger share in profits as part of the future contract. Precisely, the company wanted a 50/50 division, not in the range of 5% of first dollar gross. Which is what it had been receiving until now.
However, Sony did not want to give up a sizable portion of the profits of one of its biggest franchises at the moment. Sony tried to strike up other negotiations but Disney was not interested.
Sony Pictures, however, contends that news reports about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise have been mischaracterized, without calling out Deadline’s report specifically. Sony limits the impact to the next live action Spider-Man film, and hopes Feige can return to his role as lead producer in the future.
Sources have revealed that two more Spider-Man films are in the works. Sony Pictures is hoping to get actor Tom Holland and director Jon Watts to helm them. However, Jon Watts is currently not under any kind of contractual obligation to return for the next film.
